The Devil's Stairsteps

The Devil’s Stairsteps is a dike south of the town of La Veta that stands out in resistant relief.

Note that part of the resistant rock on the left side of the Devil’s Stairsteps has horizontal layering.  This is sedimentary rock that has been hardened by the heat of the dike.  The red arrow points to the contact.

Just east of the Devil’s Stairsteps is what appear at first glance to be two parallel dikes. However, the dike is in the recessive area between the two resistant features, which are actually the baked sedimentary strata on either side of the dike.
