This prestigious award is given by the Geological Society of America (GSA) to authors of outstanding publications in the field of engineering geology or related disciplines.

The Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) was recently recognized with the 2005 Burwell Award for its publication, Ground Water Atlas of Colorado. This prestigious award is given by the Geological Society of America (GSA) to authors of outstanding publications in the field of engineering geology or related disciplines.

It is the second national award for this publication. The American Library Association previously named it a 2004 Notable Document.

Ralf Topper, Senior Hydrogeologist with the CGS, accepted the award at an awards luncheon of the Engineering Geology Division at the GSA Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah last month. “Speaking for my co-authors, Karen Spray, William Bellis, Judith Hamilton, and Peter Barkmann, we are deeply honored to receive the 2005 Edward Burwell, Jr. Award,” said Topper. “Conveying technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences required careful planning and cooperation, a well-balanced mix of written and visual content, and a comprehensive review and editing process.” Topper added, “It is my sincere hope that the Ground Water Atlas of Colorado will be used as a reference for factual information by practicing professionals and all citizens interested in understanding more about ground water resources in our state.”

Vince Matthews, director of the CGS, explained that the publication was completed due to the dedication and contribution of many individuals and agencies. “This project took two years to complete, and we had valuable cooperation from water resources experts within the Department of Natural Resources and in private practice,” Matthews said. “A lot of people worked many hours on this project and we are very proud of the result.”

The Ground Water Atlas of Colorado (CGS Special Publication 53) can be purchased on the CGS web site at: http://geosurveystore.state.co.us/, or by calling or visiting the Colorado Geological Survey office at 1313 Sherman St, Room 715, Denver, CO 80203; (303) 866-2611. Condensed portions of the Atlas are viewable online here.

This prestigious award is made to the authors of a published paper of distinction that advances the principles or practices of Engineering Geology. The award is named in honor of Edward B. Burwell, Jr., the first chief geologist of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
